Xbox Exclusivity Makes Starfield A Better Game, Says Todd Howard

Story Highlights

  • Todd Howard recently appeared in an interview with BBC and clarified that Starfield has benefited from Xbox exclusivity. He said that the exclusivity made it a better game and also provided ease of access.
  • He also said that Bethesda has been told to expect a greater number of players compared to anything else it has ever produced. It is a huge compliment for the team due to its successful releases in the past.
  • The game’s launch has proven to be a massive win for the community. The title sold a million premium edition copies before releasing and now garnered over a million concurrent users across all platforms.
  • Starfield launched globally on Sep 6 for PC, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. It crossed 234,000 concurrent users on Steam even before its launch and garnered over a million on all platforms.

Todd Howard has praised Starfield’s Xbox exclusivity. The game director recently appeared in an interview with BBC to discuss many facets of the title’s creation. He talked about how his early ideals evolved into the final product and the huge scale of the imagined universe. Todd has also stressed that Starfield has benefited from being an Xbox exclusive, citing that it helped Bethesda yield a better product and resulted in ease of access.

When you’re making something exclusive then the more you can focus. You know this is the hardware or the thing people are playing on, so the ability to focus on that always yields a better product. You do want people to be able to access it of course. But being with Xbox means there is an ease of access for us,” said Todd Howard.

Todd Howard also said that Bethesda expects a much greater number of players than anything it has ever done before. It is a huge feat considering the massive milestones achieved by the previous releases by the studio behind arguably the best RPGs. The director also mentioned that people associate certain IPs with their respective brands, and Starfield seeks to represent Xbox.

I do also think people attach brands to certain games. When you think of Zelda you think of the Switch and I think there are times when that can be a real benefit.”

Xbox’s exclusive has finally come out worldwide, but its early access period was also a huge hit on PC and consoles. Starfield crossed 234,000 concurrent players on Steam even before its launch, and the exclusivity has played an ample role in preserving the quality. For the first time, the coup de maître title is relatively bug-free without any harsh glitches hindering it, which helps it truly stand out as Bethesda’s most polished launch to date.

To put things into perspective, the title seemingly had over a million sales on consoles and PCs with just premium edition owners before the official release. Overall, Starfield has proven to be a huge hit after its early access dominance; it has also managed to garner over a million concurrent players on consoles and PCs. However, some sound stuttering issues have proven to be the bane of the game’s existence for some players.

Starfield promises a fun time for gamers who play it as the greatest Bethesda hit. However, some users have been concerned with how it handles planets since the game does have limits in its exploration. Microsoft’s first-party title has now launched across all current-gen consoles on PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S only. The title runs at a locked 30 FPS on consoles but has a smooth 60 FPS on PCs due to no technical limitations.
