A lot has happened with Wordle since its lightning arrival in October 2021, which saw millions of players sign up every day in just a few months.

App stores were quickly flooded with clones to capitalize on their popularity. Elsewhere, a developer who made a game with a similar name available previously donated its windfall to charity after players mistook it for the game. new five-letter guessing game, with (modern) Wordle creator Dan Wardle calling it a “class act” in response.

The most notable development in Wordle’s story is its purchase by the New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, placing the game under the newspaper’s umbrella of online games.

Today, Wordle is still free to play and the game itself hasn’t changed, although there have been some minor developments behind the scenes.

In the initial migration, streaks were reset for some players and rude words were removed from the dictionary, causing the word list to change, resulting in some players being given a different word. The New York Times has also since shut down an “unauthorized” archiving site for vintage Wordle puzzles.
