Willow Showrunner Is Hopeful For Season 2… and a Theatrical Sequel



Jonathan Kasdan, showrunner of the upcoming Disney+ fantasy series, WillowHe is optimistic about a second season of the show and is even hopeful of a theatrical sequel.


In an interview with Looper, Kasdan said that there are many stories that he wants the series to tell beyond its initial run of episodes. He also shared his hope that Willow it will ultimately lead to a big screen return for the franchise. “We’d love to continue the story,” he said. “Where the street seems to lead from movies to TV, I hope we’re heading towards a time when the reverse direction can be done as well.”

However, while Kasdan admitted that he would be interested in a movie, he claims that the main goal is to make the second season of Willow ahead of a theatrical sequel to the original 1988 film. “The first thing we’d like to do is another season because we’ve got a lot more we’d like to tell here.” he said.


Willow ventures into Disney+

Disney+ announced in October 2020 that a Willow The series was in development starring Warwick Davis, who will reprise his role as the sorcerer Willow Ufgood, a character he first played in the original 1988 film. Willow it launched in May, and the second was unveiled during the D23 Expo in September. Along with Davis, Willow stars Ruby Cruz as Kit, Erin Kellyman as Jade, Ellie Bamber as Dove, and Christian Slater in a currently unnamed role.

The Disney+ series itself serves as a sequel to the original. Willow, which was directed by Ron Howard and based on a story by George Lucas. Howard will serve as executive producer of the series along with Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Roopesh Parekh and Hannah Friedman. Wendy Mericle will serve as co-showrunner alongside Kasdan.

Along with Davis, the original Willow starred Val Kilmer as Madmartigan, a swordsman who helps Willow during her quest. The film’s cast also included Joanne Whalley as Sorsha, Jean Marsh as Bavmorda, and Pat Roach as Kael. Weather Willow received mixed reviews when initially released, it would become a cult classic upon its release in home media and television reruns.

Kasdan has previously stated that Kilmer will play a crucial role in the series, though the Top Gun: Maverick The actor will not appear in Season 1. “We wanted his character to be a part of the story,” Kasdan said of Kilmer in May. “We wanted him to be on the show. Because we were filming during [the COVID-19 lockdowns], he couldn’t come to Wales and shoot with us. But he’s in the show in a big way. And we’re very excited about that. … Madmartigan is still alive.”

Willow will debut on Disney+ on November 30.
