Few One piece characters are as vile as Marshall D. Teach, commonly known as Blackbeard. Starting out as a member of Whitebeard’s crew, Teach betrayed his surrogate father and his siblings when he killed Thatch to steal the powerful Yami Yami no Mi. If that wasn’t bad enough, Blackbeard captured Portgas D. Ace and turned him over to the World Government to gain Warlord status. This is all so that he can provoke a war that allows him to acquire the crew he wanted, and kill Whitebeard and steal his Devil Fruit powers.
Interestingly, Blackbeard is the first human to One piece story able to wield two devil fruit powers at once, supposedly an impossible feat. However, CP-9’s own agent Jabra reveals this to be the case, proving that this limitation was not an elaborate World Government conspiracy. Also, both the marines and the pirates were shocked after seeing Teach wield two separate powers. But how was he able to do it? Here’s a deep dive into the most popular theories.
Cerberus Theory: Blackbeard Had Already Ate a Devil Fruit
The Cerberus Theoryeasily one of the most popular within the One piece community, posits that Blackbeard had already eaten a Devil Fruit before eating the Yami Yami no Mi. Specifically, a Mythical Zoan Fruit possibly named Inu Inu no Mi, Model Cerberus. Theorists believe that due to the nature of the actual mythical Cerberus having three independently thinking heads, this allows Teach to use more than one Devil Fruit. The justification for this theory comes mainly from how Blackbeard and his actions tend to revolve around the number three.
First is Blackbeard’s Jolly Roger, meant to represent the captain of a ship. His specific flag features the standard skull and crossbones, but oddly enough it also has three skulls that stand quite close together, like that of a Cerberus. Then there’s his supposed weapon of choice, a three-bladed claw that he’s used ever since he joined the Whitebeard Pirates. This claw is actually responsible for Shanks’ famous scars on his left eye, or it could have been the claw of Blackbeard’s hypothetical Zoan form. The fact that the myth of Cerberus exists directly in One pieceThe world of ‘s gives this theory even more credibility.
Chimera Theory: There are various entities within Blackbeard
Like the Cerberus theory, the chimera theory it operates on the idea that there are multiple entities within Blackbeard. While the former implies that they came from eating a devil fruit, the chimera theory states that this is how Blackbeard was born. Since Marco the Phoenix even said during Marineford that Blackbeard’s body was unique, there’s a bit of canon. One piece evidence to support this theory.
While it’s a fairly rare occurrence, there have been multiple cases of fetuses absorbing each other while in the womb before being born. This is commonly known as a “missing twin.” This process essentially creates a person with multiple DNAs and sets of genetics, which can result in abnormalities that remain within the body after birth. This can potentially even give that same fetus multiple sets of organs.
It’s quite possible that Blackbeard’s body has multiple “beings” inside of it, which is why having multiple Devil Fruits doesn’t kill him. If a person can only have a single Devil Fruit and Blackbeard was actually made up of several people, then it’s quite possible that his body could use as many Devil Fruits as there were people inside it.
Yami Yami no Myth – Turn off the powers of a devil fruit user
East One piece The theory is unique in that it moves almost completely away from the idea that Blackbeard’s body is responsible for his ability to use multiple Devil Fruit powers. Rather, he comes from Yami Yami no Mi, so he was willing to kill Thatch to get it. The myth of Yami Yami not he also supports the idea that Blackbeard’s Devil Fruit is as special as he makes it out to be.
Since his fight with Ace, Blackbeard has stated that Yami Yami no Mi is unique among Devil Fruits, especially Logias. While she doesn’t offer him the same elemental intangibility Logias is famous for, and actually makes him much more susceptible to damage than he would be without it, Blackbeard clearly stated that her other abilities more than make up for it. For one, his mastery over darkness has also granted him a degree of control over gravity, allowing him to pull objects and people closer to him against his will. He is even able to suck things in the darkness out of him, and then expel them with great force.
His greatest power, however, was his unique ability to shut down a Devil Fruit user’s powers, which Blackbeard first displayed against Ace. Many fans believe that it is this power, or an extension of it, that allowed Teach to take Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit abilities. If this were the case, he could easily explain why he was so interested in having this particular Devil Fruit, as he even admitted that he waited for decades aboard Whitebeard’s ship in hopes of finding it.
Vegapunk Effect – Blackbeard’s body was improved
Perhaps the wildest theory is the vegapunk effect, which proposes the idea that Vegapunk enhanced Teach’s body to be able to use multiple devil fruits. This theory is considered one of the least likely, as it would require many different details to prove true. In particular, it would have required the infamous Dr. Vegapunk, who has worked for the World Government for years, to meet Blackbeard some time before the events of One piece.
Given how little is known about Dr. Vegapunk, it’s hard to deny or accept the credibility of this theory. After the Straw Hats split up on Sabaody, Franky lands on Karakuri Island, a wintry island in the Grand Line where Vegapunk grew up. It has been confirmed that Blackbeard was also born on an island in the Grand Line, though the exact location has yet to be revealed. If any experiments were to take place, it would most likely have been on Karakuri Island, but without knowing where Blackbeard is from it’s impossible to say for sure. While it is possible that these experiments occurred after Teach joined the Whitebeard Pirates, it is highly unlikely given that the World Government would have known of the threat he posed.
There are many potential explanations for how Blackbeard can wield two devil fruits in One piece. In fact, if he can handle two, then there’s no reason to believe he can’t also handle three, especially given the character’s, as well as the series as a whole, obsession with the number three. Blackbeard even uses three pistols and is missing three teeth. Whether the real reason is good or bad, one thing is for sure: One piece he loves taking his time getting there.
