What happens when the timer runs out in DMZ?

So you’re your squad and you’re powering it up in the DMZ, doing all the wonderful content the mode has to offer, when you see the timer on the left of the screen start to go off in red and white, over and over again. Soon, there are only five minutes left and the announcer suggests you get to the extraction before it’s too late. So you and your companions do exactly that: Head to the extraction and come out with plenty of loot. But have you ever wondered what happens after that timer ends? If so, you’ve come to the right place, because we’ve faced the DMZ after that ominous timer hits zero, and we’ve barely lived to tell about it. Here’s everything we know about the DMZ, post-zero.

What happens when the timer hits zero in the DMZ

You make it seem like the game ends when the timer hits zero, but that’s not entirely true. You see, after zero, the DMZ becomes a race for survival, rather than a casual looter with a PvP side. The first thing to note is that the timer resets to about 8-10 minutes. During this time, the radiation begins to spread, slowly engulfing the map in lethal doses of toxin. Don’t worry though. This toxin is the same as what you would find when entering a radiation zone normally. A gas mask will counter this for a while.

However, what is more worrisome is how this radiation interacts with the extraction points. This is not a manual for DMZ, but if the spreading radiation reaches an extraction point on the map, it actually deactivates the extraction point completely. If you haven’t already called to extract when the radiation hits, then you’re in for a world of pain. Instead, you’ll need to carry the rapidly spreading radiation to the next extraction point before it can reach it. Eventually, the radiation will cover the entire map and all extractions will be disabled, ensuring your death in the process. Creepy stuff.
