The Joker is Trying to Destroy Another Sidekick

When Batman’s arch nemesis, the Joker, learned that Superman had a new partner, it was only a matter of time before he tried to harm Boy Thunder (David Sikela). This happened during the final reel of Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #9 (by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Steve Wands). After saving Gotham City from a flood caused by the Key, Joker kidnaps Boy Thunder, exposing the young hero to his poison and clearly has plans to torment him further.

However, the Joker may not be planning to kill Boy Thunder outright. He seems especially interested in taking him down. If so, then he won’t kill Boy Thunder, but will psychologically tear him apart and then release him into the world. After all, taking someone Batman and Superman are working hard to train and turning him into a weapon of mass destruction would be a hilarious joke on his mind.

The Joker wants to kill Superman’s new partner

The Joker’s history with his sidekicks is well documented, but Boy Thunder presents a new kind of challenge. In truth, this is long before Jason Todd entered Batman’s life, which means Boy Thunder is proof of his love for torturing his teammates. His exact plans are still unclear, but it’s not possible that he will end up well for David. The only problem with this is that the Joker doesn’t know how fragile Boy Thunder’s state of mind already is. He has been traumatized by the loss of all of his world, as well as his parents, suffering intense survivor guilt. After combining this with his violent temper and his powers, Boy Thunder looks less like a colorful new sidekick and more like a bomb waiting to go off. The Joker could end up becoming the detonator.

He’s already infected Boy Thunder with Joker’s venom, and his alliance with Key presents him with endless possibilities to torture his captive. Key’s greatest skill is his abilities as a chemist, regularly creating formulas to bend people to his will. If he’s tailored any concoction to the Joker’s specifications, then Boy Thunder’s mind is about to be assaulted like never before. This, however, could cause bigger problems than anyone realizes.

Assuming that the Joker is thinking of this and wants to destroy Boy Thunder’s mind, then he is operating on the prediction that the new sidekick will either get discouraged due to the torture, or is counting on him to completely lose control and go insane. The latter seems the more likely option, as the Joker is a fan of chaos, and unleashing it in the form of Superman’s sidekick would be too good an opportunity for him to pass up.

Unfortunately, both Joker and Key have no real context about Boy Thunder or the nature of his powers. They have no idea how much stress you are under already. They might be assuming it will take time to break down, only for it to break much faster than expected. Boy Thunder could very well kill them if he catches them off guard. Besides this, the upper limits of his powers have yet to be shown. Superman is the only one who has shown to be able to resist them so far. Even if Boy Thunder ends up in a fight with Superman, many ordinary people will die in the crossfire if their wayward partner heads towards a populated area. Ironically, by trying to be a monster, the Joker may inadvertently create something worse than himself.
