For a long time, the loot and shooter niche was dominated by franchises like Borderlands and Destiny, and even Warframe to a degree. Fast forward to 2023, and we’re looking at a number of contenders looking to take the crown for themselves. Of course, a fair number of these games had been scheduled for 2022 releases, but have since been pushed back. That just means they’ll bring more to the table, right?

alterborn

Release date: to be confirmed

Starting off this list, we have Alterborn. This was supposed to be the game that scratched our Remnant itch until the sequel was announced. Well, Remnant 2 has been announced and it appears to be quite far along in the production cycle.

But not everything is pessimism for the contender. Alterborn can still do something of its own by leaning more into what makes it unique, like the alternate paths that appeal to players who are in high-risk, high-reward scenarios. Hopefully, it opens this year.

marauders

Early Access Release Date: October 03, 2022

We may be cheating a bit here, but hear us out. Marauders has been available in Early Access since October of last year. But so far, it’s still on the empty side. It’s very similar to Escape from Tarkov in many ways, but with ship-to-ship space combat. It will still be in early access until October of this year or spring of 2024. At that point, we expect it to be a fully realized game that won’t have to reboot everything every half year or so. Still, the game is rolling out planned content gradually in 2023, which is always a good sign.

The day before

Release date: March 01, 2023

The only reason the day before is so far down on this list is that we don’t know if it will release on March 1st. The game looks good, don’t get us wrong, but it’s been lagging multiple times now. Any more, and you might start to give Duke Nukem Forever a run for its money. The strangest thing is that zombie and survival loot games are no longer the money makers they used to be. The game has its job done.

But we’re willing to give it the benefit of the doubt if it turns out to be as good as advertised.

LLL Project

Estimated full release date: 2024

Dubbed the true MMORPG Looter Shooter, this upcoming game is published by NCSoft. In case you didn’t know, they’re the ones behind Guild Wars 2, Lineage II, and Blade and Soul. So they know what to do to succeed in the MMO space. How that translates into a looter shooter remains to be seen. But let’s hope there’s more to show off in the next beta version of the game than pretty graphics.

quantum knights

Initial release date: 2023

Magical firearm in a medieval fantasy setting, that’s what Quantum Knights leans towards as its main selling point. The game offers a combat style with an emphasis on upgrading firearms by carving magic circles. Thus allowing players to tailor their own specialty and combat style. It’s amazing how many of these third person shooters are coming out this year.

The heart of the division

Initial release date: 2023

This spin-off of The Division is a free game set in the American Northwest. The battle zone is a small town called Silver Creek. There are two main game modes at launch: Storm Operations, a PvPvE mode that can support up to 45 players, and Excursion Operation, a PvE-focused game mode where players can go on missions and collect gear. That’s great, but we all know we’re in this game to raise our gear score and take on the Dark Zones. That hasn’t changed much.

With Division 2 coming to Steam later this month, it seems like there’s even more reason to give this game a try when it launches sometime in 2023.

SYNCHRONIZED

Release date: to be confirmed

There are more than a few reasons to be excited about SYNCCHED. From what we know about the game, it is a match-based rogue-lite shooter that has both a PvE and a PvP mode. In both game modes, players are aided by a “Companion” nanomachine. That’s the game’s unique selling point. Reports from players in the current beta suggest that the two modes are very different from each other. It’s still buggy for the most part, but it has potential.

There is an open beta version at the moment. You can register at Steam and check out the game for yourselves.

Destiny 2 Lightfall Expansion

Release date: February 23, 2023

It is the beginning of the end. The Destiny 2 Lightfall expansion sees Guardian pushed to the limit when the Witness and the Black Fleet appear on Earth’s threshold. Major changes are planned to take effect during and after the release of Lightfall. It’s no exaggeration to say that we could see Destiny 2 taking things to another level with this year’s offering.

This should have been higher on our list, but we’re saving that spot for new releases. But Destiny is still number one in our books.

ARC Raiders

Release date: 2023

When we first saw the trailers for ARC Raiders, we were blown away by what it’s trying to achieve. Our thoughts immediately turned to other games like Horizon, where Aloy used traps and traps to take apart robot dinosaurs piece by piece. The idea is a bit similar here too, but on a multiplayer scale. You’ll definitely need to think outside the box for some of these encounters and be quick to claim the best loot for yourself and your friends.

Now, it’s been quietly delayed for a while. We hope it really pushes this year with a release.

the first descendant

Release date: to be confirmed

It’s been a few months since the open beta of this upcoming action-RPG, and while First Descendant still needs a lot of work to get players committed to “the grind”, we can guarantee that the main draw of the game is the fights against giant enemies. it’s extremely fun once you get used to it. The same can be said for his Warframe-esque approach to characters and their subclasses.

We’re very excited about this one and can’t wait to get our hands on it again in the next beta.

red drop

Release date: 2023

Redfall didn’t get number two on the list because we like the idea of an open-world first-person shooter set in a vampire-infested city, that’s part of the reason, but it’s mostly being done by Arcane Studios. These guys really know their stuff when it comes to this kind of thing. They made hits like Dishonored, Prey, and Deathloop. So we’re sure it’s going to be a fun experience overall.

Plus, when your game is compared to Borderlands, you know you’re doing something right.

remnant 2

Release date: 2023

Our most anticipated loot shooter for 2023 has to be Remnant 2.

The first Remnant was a special game that combined Souls-like and thirsty shooter elements. It was a standout game when it came out, and it went under the radar of most people. Fortunately, word of mouth spread, and the first game enjoyed moderate success in the years that followed.

Remnant 2 promises to build on its predecessor in every way possible, while maintaining its random play roots and a wide variety of weapons and class abilities. We’re also looking at how the developers can expand the story after humanity earned a respite after surviving years of Root’s invasion.

And that’s it for our list of the best loot shooter games to get us excited in 2023 and beyond. Now is a great time to search for a hidden gem with all we have to choose from within the next few months.

Check out this YouTuber video moxsy where he talks about the looter shooting games he is most excited about in 2023.
