  • Nintendo dominated the sales charts, as the list was filled with all the Switch games, except Hogwarts Legacy for the PS5. The Switch also loomed over the hardware sales.
  • Tears of the Kingdom has reportedly sold over 10 million units worldwide, which makes it the fastest-selling entry to reach 10 million in the whole Zelda series.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has reportedly proven to be a gigantic success for Nintendo and Zelda series alike, selling over an unprecedented number of copies around the globe. However, it has rolled over a staggering number of physical copies. To put things into perspective, it reached the threshold of 1,119,502 retail sales in Japan alone, as stated in the new Famitsu weekly report for last week.

The entry was able to sell such a huge number of physical units in its first week, noting its power in the region. It’s also one of the quite rare times when the retail sales are so on par with the digital version. The actual sales number for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom stands over a total of 2.24 million units after counting digital sales. Hence, it has easily stolen the first spot in the weekly sales charts ending 18 May 2023.

Including global sales, Tears of the Kingdom reportedly rolled over 10 million physical and digital copies in just three days after release, which makes it the fastest-selling entry to reach 10 million in the whole Zelda series. Moreover, it is the fastest-selling Nintendo game ever in the Americas. The whole series also sold over 130 million units as of March 2023.

Coming back to the weekly Japanese retail sales chart, the second spot is held by none other than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with it selling 9,794 copies. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also saw an uplift in sales last week because of the new sequel, with the title selling over an impressive 7,335 physical copies last week; fans who have not yet planed the predecessor would be the buyers.

The whole weekly Japanese physical game sales chart is filled with Nintendo Switch entries, showing a great result for Nintendo. There is only a single PlayStation 5 entry in the list, namely Hogwarts Legacy that sold 6,384 physical copies to stand at the sixth place. Compared to all the included entries, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom far outsells the competition even if every other game is incremented together.

On the hardware side, the Nintendo Switch OLED sold 65,628 units, the base version sold 11,395 units, while the Lite version stood at 6,029 units. The PlayStation 5 digital edition console rolled over 5,545 units, while the Xbox Series family consoles are barely above the 100 in Japan.
