Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has set a new record by selling about 500k physical copies during its launch weekend in France. As reported by Oscar Lemaire on Twitter, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, released exclusively for Nintendo Switch, also surpassed the sales of FIFA, which only managed to sell about 420k physical copies in its launch week despite its multi-platform release.

According to the Tweet (via Google Translate), Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has surpassed Pokemon Sun and Moon, which managed to sell 425k copies in their launch week. The latest adventure game by Nintendo has also surpassed the sales of Red Dead Redemption 2 and FIFA 23, which were blessed with a multi-platform release, unlike Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Nintendo’s Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released for the Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023. The game came as a highly anticipated successor to Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which came out in March 2017 for Nintendo Switch and Wii U. Much like its predecessor, the latest Zelda game focuses on open-world exploration and introduces new mechanics that would go on to inspire many upcoming open-world games.

The Zelda craze isn’t only limited to France. During its launch week, the game continues selling well globally in physical and digital formats. The latest addition to the Zelda franchise then also became the biggest boxed game launch of the year in the UK. Judging from how it’s going, the game will likely continue to dominate the sales for upcoming weeks too.
