Some Steam Deck owners who recently customized their handhelds with cheap vinyl skins now regret their decision and warn others not to follow suit.
Many Steam Deck owners like to customize their portable devices to make them look unique. Some buy vinyl sleeves to cover the plain black shell of the Steam Deck to give it more variety. While some of these vinyl covers are great, others might mess something up.
Some of these vinyl stickers have a particular type of glue that would need heat to activate their stickiness. When applied to Steam Deck, most owners reported that the grip was strong and did not show any form of tearing. If they get bored with the design, they can simply remove the stick and apply another. They assumed they would just need to use a heat gun to remove the glue, but unfortunately, something caused a few problems when doing that.
redditor rkatz94 Y ZoteTheMitey shared his experience with removing these inferior vinyl stickers on his Steam Decks. They reported on the SteamDeck subreddit that when removing the vinyl stickers, the glue residue remained and caused some sort of damage to the case. Dbrand, a popular distributor of vinyl decals, only uses high quality 3M vinyl material. It allows users to easily apply their vinyl sticker designs and also effortlessly remove them without leaving behind any glue residue.
For homeowners who have removed vinyl stickers and left behind glue residue, some redditors have suggested applying hand sanitizer or medical grade alcohol to the affected areas, but it will take time to do so.
The lesson to be learned from this is to not use inferior quality vinyl stickers on a Steam Deck or any kind of high-end device. It may just leave behind glue residue that will take a long time to clean up completely.
Steam Deck is now available for purchase worldwide.
