Story Highlights

  • Starfield managed to get a negative user rating on Metacritic approximately 3 months prior to its release. How this happened is a mystery but the review has since been taken down.
  • Despite the review no longer being on the site, the user score distribution still shows one rating. This could be a glitch or some other issue that may be fixed later on.
  • The Xbox showcase earlier this week has managed to propel Starfield to new heights but it remains to be seen whether it will actually deliver when September 6 comes around.

In a highly unusual event, it appears that Starfield, Bethesda’s upcoming space RPG set on an unfathomable scale, has somehow received a negative user review on Metacritic three months prior to its launch. There are several ways to explain this as it can either be some kind of bug, perhaps a bot, or maybe a hack. Regardless of how it happened, this should serve as another reason for Metacritic to improve its platform.

Furthermore, the review seems to have been taken down but the user score distribution still shows one negative rating on both Xbox and PC. This could very well be a bug that may get ironed out in time but if it doesn’t, Starfield will have to start things off with a very minor blemish on its Metacritic user score. In the grand scheme of things, this is pretty much a non-issue for Starfield as it will succeed or fail based on its achievements.

The main issue, however, is the system itself. Aside from this instance, user scores are often avenues for people to drop negative review bombs on games simply due to personal grievances and bias. Players fail to take an objective look at a game and instead leave their polarized thoughts on such sites that kills the real purpose of user scores.

We were given a comprehensive look at Starfield during its Direct at the phenomenal Xbox showcase earlier this week and so far, Bethesda is not showing any signs of slowing down with this large-scale project. Countless players have been skeptical of this space adventure simply because it felt too good to be true. But after seeing that presentation, many have turned into believers and are looking forward to it.

In fact, the presentation has had such a profound effect that Starfield became the top-selling game on Steam within one day. As to how it will be received by critics and players remains to be seen. But one thing we can say for sure is that Bethesda appears to be trying its hardest to deliver the most ambitious RPG experience.

Starfield is set to release on September 6, 2023, on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Game Pass, and PC.
