Shazam 2 Is Inspired More by Greek Mythology Than DC Comics

Shazam! fury of the gods Director David F. Sandberg explains why the next DC Universe movie takes inspiration from Greek mythology instead of the comics.

In an interview with Empire, Sandberg explained that while the first Shazam! The film did well both critically and commercially, he still had ideas he wanted to explore. He decided that for the sequel he would create characters inspired by Greek mythology, including the film’s villains, the Daughters of Atlas.

“We landed there because Shazam’s powers come from the Greek gods,” he said. “So what if those powers were stolen from the gods and now they want revenge?” Sandberg concluded by joking about what other characters will appear in the film, such as a dragon that he described as “sort of wooden and [having the ability to emanate] a scary effect.” He added: “It was really cool to dive into the mythology, rather than the comics.”

fury of the gods will see the World’s Mightiest Mortal face off against the Daughters of Atlas, Hespera and Kalypso, played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, respectively. It will not see the return of the villain from the previous film, Dr. Sivana. Despite this, Sivana actor Mark Strong gave Mirren and Liu his blessing last year, noting, “I had to bite my tongue for so long. [about not being in the film]… I’m very happy to make way for Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, who I think are going to make a fantastic pair of villains. I mean, judging by the performances of Emma Thompson and Emma Stone in cruellaI think it’s villain time.” Strong also speculated that Sivana and Mister Mind will return at some point in the future.

Also, though not yet released, the film itself received praise from leading man Zachary Levi, who said it’s better than its predecessor, though he’s still proud of the latter. “I think we had more time, we had more budget,” Levi continued. “Essentially, we had the whole cast coming back, and we all knew our characters a little bit more; we could sit with them a little bit more.” During this, Levi also sang the praises of Mirren and Liu just like Strong had.

Shazam! fury of the gods it is currently scheduled to hit theaters on March 17, 2023.
