Star Trek: Prodigy has the USS Protostar being pursued by two very different pursuers. Here’s a spoiler-filled recap of the Paramount+ series.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Episode 15, “Masquerade,” now airing on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Prodigy continues the USS protostarThe budding partnership with space scoundrel Thadiun Okona, with the misfit crew barely escaping Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway as they headed for the Romulan Neutral Zone. However, while a diplomatic crisis is avoided for the moment, the Romulans are now after the protostar themselves and Janeway refuses to give up the chase. These pursuers converge as the protostar searches for repairs, with at least one character revealing their true colors as the search for the experimental spaceship escalates.

With the protostar hiding in the asteroid belt of the Neutral Zone to repair the damage suffered during his pursuit with the USS Bold, Okona proves invaluable in providing assistance and offering new direction. Dal quickly becomes jealous of how much the rest of the crew like Okona, while Okona recommends that they stop at a remote outpost for more extensive repairs. Dal is upset that his guest subverts his authority, but the rest of the crew happily accept the option, though Hologram Janeway warns them that the station has a reputation for scientific experimentation expressly prohibited by the Federation.

At the outpost, Dal is shocked to discover from the resident geneticists that he is an augmented human who was genetically spliced with DNA from 26 other alien species. Considering himself a failed experiment stemming from Arik Soong’s radical theories and processes, he regrets not having biological parents. Dal quietly accepts an offer from the outpost scientists to undergo a procedure that would continue to enhance his abilities and unlock his full potential, though Gwyn is still concerned about the changes in his personality.

Admiral Janeway implores Starfleet Command to allow her to venture into the Neutral Zone to retrieve the protostar but is flatly rejected by ex Company-D Captain turned Admiral Jellico. He orders her to destroy the ship if the Romulans compromise it. Ascencia volunteers to infiltrate the Neutral Zone to hunt down the protostar alone, despite Janeway’s warning of the inherent risk. The Romulans are one step ahead of the Bold with his special ops team, the Tal Shiar, tracking the protostar to the outpost. They tackle him, subduing Hologram Janeway and Zero.

Upon learning that the Romulans have beaten them to the end protostarJaneway contemplates destroying the starship while Tal Shiar intercepts the protostarlanding party. Okona flees, leaving the crew to fend for themselves. Dal’s augmented abilities allow him to easily defeat the Tal Shiar squad. The genetic augmentation begins to visibly affect Dal’s body and personality; the different species spliced into her DNA cause her to become unstable, which causes physical side effects as she mutates.

As Dal’s friends take him back to the protostar to reverse the proceedings, they are chased by Tal Shiar, and Murf surprisingly steps in to save the day. Admiral Janeway orders the Bold withdraw when it becomes clear that the Tal Shiar are defeated. Dal returns to normal in the infirmary. But frustrated by this development, Ascencia meets privately with the Diviner and activates a Drednok stowaway… revealing herself to be a sinister clone of Gwyn, sent back in time to retrieve the protostar. Now there are three enemies in the Bold plotting against Starfleet.
