Previous Blade Reboot Director Voices Support for His Replacement


Former Blade director Bassam Tariq is expressing his support for the MCU film’s new director Yann Demange, who he previously worked with on Mogul Mowgli.


Previous Sword Director Bassam Tariq has shared that he couldn’t be happier to see Yann Demange replace him in the director’s chair in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.


In a statement shared on instagramTariq wrote: “The news is finally out: my dear brother Yann Mounir Demange is directing Sword! You guys are in for a real treat. Yann was instrumental in giving me the courage to start developing mogul mowgli. He also played a pivotal role during the publication, helping Riz [Ahmed], my editor (Adam Biskupski) and I get the film across the finish line. During that time and through the pandemic, Yann became a dear friend and brother. I couldn’t be happier for him. As he takes on this role, I am proud to support him as he has supported me.”

Tariq stepped down as director in September 2022 and remained as an executive producer on the next MCU film. After his departure, the production was delayed. Sword, and reports surfaced that declared star Mahershala Ali was disappointed with the film’s “lackluster” script. Despite rumors that X Men ’97 Head writer Beau DeMayo had been tapped to rewrite SwordMichael Starrbury (when they see us) was later revealed as the film’s new screenwriter, apparently replacing former writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour.

Although it has not been confirmed by Marvel, the new Sword The film is reportedly being shot with a “dark and gritty tone, falling on the edgier side of Marvel fare and maybe even finding[ing] common shading with the fondly remembered Sword movies made in the early 2000s by New Line”.
