Pokemon Scarlet and VioletThe Spain-inspired region of Paldea has introduced fans to a ton of new Pokemon. While the game has its fair share of glitches and performance issues, that hasn’t distracted most gamers from appreciating just how much Game Freak has experimented with the series’ traditional formula. One of the new Pokémon that players can encounter throughout the Paldea region has been a long-awaited addition, but it just might have some of the wildest mechanics out there.
It took 26 years and more than 150 types of water, but Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has finally introduced a dolphin Pokémon. Finizen is a Water-type Pokémon that inhabits the waters surrounding the Paldea region. Visually, it may not be as impressive as other newcomers, but its evolution and Signature Ability make Finizen an incredibly unique Pokemon that’s unlike any other yet.
Why you should catch Finizen
Being a straight Water-type, Finizen can be found exactly where one might expect to catch a Dolphin Pokémon. Once players gain the ability to navigate the oceans of Paldea, they can search for Finizen and try to catch him. As the first part of a two-stage evolution tree, Finizen can be maintained quite well before evolving. It has a solid move list, including some standout Water-types like Aqua Jet and Dive. Still, Finizen’s evolution will give players access to a much more impressive selection of moves.
Players will most likely be able to evolve their Finizen shortly after catching one. Most Pokemon in the ocean will be somewhere around level 30, as players will need to progress through The Path of Legends quest line to unlock the Surf ability. Finizen can evolve once it reaches level 38, though triggering this evolution is a bit trickier than that and requires using one of Pokemon Scarlet and VioletThe new features of.
How to evolve Finizen into Palafin
Evolving a Finizen into a Palafin requires leveling up the Finizen while attached to a Union Circle. This is a new feature in scarlet and violet which allows up to four players to connect with each other online and explore the Paldea region together. It’s as close to true co-op as a mainline series. Pokemon has gotten the game, though players will need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to use it. Once Finizen reaches level 38, players will only need to level it up again while in a bind circle to evolve it.
At first glance, Palafin appears almost identical to Finizen. Its size, color, and appearance remain exactly the same, with the only initial exception being a pink heart on the Pokémon’s chest. However, Palafin’s new ability, Zero to Hero, makes him unique. This ability allows Palafin to transform from his normal Zero Form into the larger and stronger Hero Form. To trigger this transformation, players will need to switch to Palafin during battle, either manually or by using a move like Baton Pass.
Upon switching, Palafin will undergo a major appearance change. He will be standing on his fins in a superhero stance, and the game states that he underwent a “heroic transformation”. Palafin’s Hero Form increases his Attack and Special Attack stats, along with minor increases to most other stats. Players will only need to activate Zero to Hero once during the battle, as Palafin will remain in his hero form until the end of the battle.
