Pokémon Scarlet and Violet walkthrough, best path

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet for Nintendo Switch combines the traditional gameplay of Pokémon with the open world nature of Paldea.

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, you are a transfer student to the region’s Pokémon Academy, and during the school’s annual treasure hunt, you find yourself on three adventures: Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street.

Thanks to the open-world nature of the games, you’re free to tackle these stories, along with many of the activities within them, in any order you like.

There is, however, a best way to go through these stories which you can find below our Pokémon Scarlet and Violet tutorial. We’ve also included a list of helpful tips for your Pokémon journey and links to our other Scarlet and Violet guides. However, if you’re not sure if the games are for you, check out our Pokemon Scarlet and Violet review.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Walkthrough

Your first task in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is to complete The First Day of School, which acts as the opening chapter of the games.

With this complete introduction, you are free to complete all three stories: Victory Road, Path of Legends and Starfall Street, at your own pace. This means that you can jump between the three stories, going from defeating the gym leaders to investigating the Titan Pokémon, whenever you want.

If you want to learn more about these stories, visit our pages on Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street.

You can complete them one by one, but we recommend the following preferential path through Paldea, which we detail below. This is just our suggestion, so feel free to experiment, explore, and see what you like as you go.

Tips for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your adventure through the Paldea region in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet:

  • Pay attention to the number of Province and Area in which you are. Wild Pokemon and Trainer levels are dictated by Province and Area number, with the idea being that the further you get from Cabo Poco, the stronger the Pokemon will become. This means that wild Pokémon from the northern provinces of Paldea will usually have higher levels than those from the south.
  • Visit the watchtowers! Watchtowers not only give you a great view of the surroundings, but you can also fast travel to them. This makes it easier to reach certain parts of Paldea that do not contain a Pokémon Center.
  • Have your Pokémon explore Paldea using Let’s Go. This function allows your leader Pokémon to escape from its Poké Ball and explore the world with you. As they do so, they can battle Pokémon and collect items. Doing so can help you level up your Pokemon quickly and gather crafting materials for TMs.
  • Check your Pokédex regularly. Your Pokédex in scarlet and purple not only collects information about Pokémon you’ve personally seen or caught, but also those you haven’t encountered yet. These notes include the habitats of the invisible Pokémon, which are incredibly useful for tracking down a creature you may not have seen in the vast wilderness of Paldea.
  • Always carry a pair of Pokémon dolls with you. Due to the open-world nature of Scarlet and Violet, there’s a chance you could find yourself fighting a wild Pokemon well above your current party levels. It can be quite difficult to escape these fights, so it’s always a good idea to carry a number of Pokemon Dolls in your bag, as these items will allow you to instantly escape battle.

  • Recharge your Tera Orb! Remember: you can only terastalize your Pokémon once before you have to visit a Pokémon Center and recharge your Tera Orb. Because of this, it’s always a good idea to visit a Pokemon Center after Terastallizing Pokemon – you never know when you’ll need it again!
  • You can change the Tera Types of your Pokémon. While we are on the subject of Tera types, it is important to mention that they can be changed. This can be done by collecting Tera Shards and then visiting the Treasure Eatery in Medali. There’s a different type of shard for each type and you’ll need 50 shards to complete the switch, so it’s quite a chore, but it’s worth doing for the right Pokemon.
  • Look for the character with gold chat boxes above their heads. These characters are connected to a feature, either by checking your Pokemon’s friendship levels or offering a trade, which means they’re always worth a conversation with.
  • Eat a sandwich or a meal. All the food in Scarlet and Violet, from the ice cream to the sandwiches you make, will provide you with a set of boosts. These can range from a specific type becoming more powerful in Tera Raids to increasing your chances of finding eggs during picnics. Therefore, it is always a good idea to stop for something to eat.
  • Attend classes at the Academy! It’s easy to forget that you’re still a student when you’re out in the wilderness of Paldea, and while the Academy may be far from your mind, it’s well worth a visit. Taking classes at the Academy will allow you to develop friendships with your teachers, and in doing so, unlock useful rewards.
  • Pick up small, shiny items. There are two types of items you can collect in Scarlet and Violet: those represented by a Poké Ball (as is tradition) and the little sparkles you’ll see on the ground. It’s tempting to ignore these little sparkles, but they’re definitely worth collecting. You never know, it could be an evolution stone!
