Ed Boon has recently released a new Mortal Kombat puzzle that suggests a complete reboot of the franchise.
Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon recently shared a new short clip on his personal Twitter account. On it is a clock that counts down the hours from 9 to 10 to 11. For fans of the Mortal Kombat series, this will immediately let you know that these numbers represent the newer titles with the latest MK11. When it lands on 11 it appears to have missed and then quickly bypasses 12 and instead jumps directly to 1. Very strange.
So what does it all mean? It’s clear that NetherRealm Studios is going to skip calling the next game Mortal Kombat 12 and instead completely reboot the entire franchise all over again and start from the beginning, basically the story. For those who haven’t played Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath, check back now because the next paragraph contains SPOILERS.
By the end of the Aftermath expansion, if the story’s canon is to be based on the ending of Liu Kang, the new god of thunder and fire has time reset. He meets Kung Lao’s ancestor in the past and trains him to become the first Mortal Kombat champion. Based on that, it’s possible that the next Mortal Kombat game will include the first Kung Lao and his story with a rebooted MK universe. It can also include familiar faces, but in their younger forms in the Mortal Kombat 1 era.
Ed Boon hasn’t shared any other hints for this new Twitter post, but the announcement might be close as he’s slowly sharing some hints. Stay tuned for more.
