Making the Most of Tera Types

The new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet cheat adds unpredictability to battles, which shakes up competitive fights and breaks the Pokemon meta.

Battle tricks have become a regular part of the Pokemon Serie. Every new mainline game has introduced something new since the fifth generation, but recently they became more focused on Pokémon. Mega Evolutions, Dynamax and Now scarlet and violetAll Terastallized Pokémon revolve around the Pokémon themselves. While not all of the tricks have been successful, Tera Pokémon presents an interesting addition to the battle, allowing players to turn the tide in unexpected ways. To use it correctly, it’s important to understand what it does first.

Any Pokemon can Terastallize just like any Pokemon can Dynamax in sword and shield. When used, the Pokémon becomes encased in crystal and gains a giant crown of sorts on its head that represents its Tera type. Normally, the type is dictated by the main type of the Pokemon, so a Fire type would be Tera Fire, and Wooper, a Water/Ground type, would probably be Tera Water. However, this is not set in stone and Tera Pokémon in the wild or those caught in raids can have any type. This is what makes fighting on scarlet and violet interesting.

How to Correctly Use Tera Types in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Players can throw a wrench in a battle or strategy by changing the type of Pokemon. For example, an opponent could be using a Magmortar and the obvious strategy would be to use a Water, Ground, or Rock-type Pokémon or moves. However, that strategy would go out the window if Magmortar terrastalizes into a grass-type. The player will need to pivot unless they have something to counter this sudden change. There’s also no way for a player to know what an opponent’s Tera type will be, so the flow of battle can change rapidly at any time. It’s more important than ever to make sure Pokemon have a good variety of moves to properly counter opponents.

When a Pokémon’s type changes, it also affects the moves and attack bonus of the same type. So once the hypothetical Magmortar turns to grass via terrastalling, its Solar Beam will gain increased power, and any of the types it would normally be weak against are suddenly in jeopardy. This can greatly benefit players who like to surprise by giving Pokémon unusual moves that are boosted by their Tera-types.

While the Tera Pokemon aren’t always the prettiest forms, they do add a lot to the already stellar gameplay. They change the way players fight and make ranked battles and competitions more interesting. Instead of simply relying on the best teams and meta, players will need to be prepared for Tera-types that can change battles.
