The following contains spoilers for DC vs. Vampires #11, now on sale at DC Comics
The conflict between the remaining mortal heroes of dc vs vampires and their former vampiric allies has been largely brutal and tragic. But as it turns out, one of DC’s most infamous anti-heroes isn’t just benefiting from the situation, he’s positively thriving in these tumultuous times.
dc vs vampires #11 (by James Tynion IV, Matthew Rosenberg, Otto Schmidt, Francesco Mortarino, Pierluigi Casolino, and Tom Napolitano) reveals Lobo’s role in the story, pitting both sides against each other. It’s just the latest example of Lobo’s wild card status and highlights what makes him such a unique fixture in the DC Universe, regardless of which DC Universe he finds himself in.
Lobo is the latest wild card in DC vs. vampires
The world of dc vs vampires it has been brutal, filled with death and destruction for the few remaining heroes that were freed from Nightwing’s vampiric control. His latest desperate plan to save the world has only further divided the heroes with Batgirl leading a small group of rebels in Gotham City, Green Arrow working to liberate a prison camp from the control of an evil Hawkman, and Steel doing his best. to escort Supergirl back. into the sunlight to restore her powers. It’s this latter plan that might have the best chance of success, as the trio of Steel, Supergirl, and Jayna just have to infiltrate a spaceport and escort Supergirl onto a ship, so she can be exposed to sunlight. .
After reaching Australia (at the cost of Mera staying behind to combat her vampirized husband Aquaman), the trio manage to sneak into the spaceport. It turns out that Nightwing, seeking to prevent any interplanetary incident, has been sending all the aliens on Earth back to their home worlds in exchange for peace. However, as they make their way through the base, they run into Lobo, who has been hired by the vampires to provide security and ensure that the refugee aliens return home. Initially, Lobo fights off the trio, but when Supergirl reveals that they can make a deal with him too, the main man agrees to listen.
From there, Lobo becomes the ultimate wild card, quickly interrupting both sides. He helps the trio get to a ship (allowing Supergirl to escape and catch up with a rocket she is taking off). But as soon as the corrupt Martian Manhunter and Mrs. Martian investigate, Lobo quickly reveals the truth. However, instead of siding with the vampires, Lobo still fights alongside Steel and Jayna, admitting out loud that he revealed the truth mainly to make things “interesting”.
Lobo cannot be converted in DC vs. Vampires – O Controlled
It’s a fun beat for Lobo and a good reminder of what makes Lobo so variable in the DC Universe. Especially in alternate timelines (like the world of deceased), Lobo’s unique healing ability and flexible morality allow him to switch sides and turn the tide of battle without warning. His healing factor likely prevents him from becoming a vampire (unlike Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, and Superman, each of whom were corrupted in turn), but his willingness to work with them is a reminder that scruples de Lobo are more or less non-existent.
Still, her decision to work alongside the heroes and provide a distraction for Supergirl could be the key to unleashing the hero’s most powerful fighter, setting the stage for Supergirl to help bring about the end of the vampire kingdom. In a world where the living and the walking dead have become the primary moral conflict, Lobo’s moral ambiguity has allowed him to transform himself into a deadly revolutionary in the best way. It’s a position Lobo fills well in almost any universe, and could be crucial to this timeline’s last, best hope.
