The Elder is the second boss that players face in Valheim. He resembles a living tree like the mythical Ent, and has the power to use plants for his attacks. Although he can be slow, The Elder’s hits hurt a lot and most of his attacks can cover a huge area.
In this guide, we will share some tips and tricks on how to easily defeat The Elder in Valheim.
How to find and summon The Elder
To find the old man, you can search for his vegvisir, who can often be found at the end of dungeons, or can sometimes be seen along the outer walls of structures. Interacting with him will reveal the Abandoned Elder’s Altar, which would be located somewhere in the Mirkwoods.
To summon The Elder, you need to place 3 Ancient Seeds on his altar. These seeds are randomly dropped by defeating gray dwarf brutes or by destroying their nests.
How to Prepare for the Elder Boss Fight
To prepare for The Elder, it is recommended to have the complete bronze set. As for weapons, The Elder has no weaknesses or resistances, so any weapon will do. Bows are a relatively safe option due to their range, but it can take a while to finish the fight, while melee weapons can deal significant damage in exchange for being in the impact zone most of the time.
Make sure to stock up on food to heal yourself and get the Rested effect for increased health and stamina regeneration. If you can, it’s also recommended to set up a portal and bed in a nearby safe area to get back into the fight quickly; The Ancient One remains spawned even if you die.
The old man moves and attacks
The Ancient One has three main attacks:
- vines – The Elder shoots multiple vines in a single direction. It is best to avoid this by dodging or hiding behind one of the pillars. It is not recommended to block this attack, as it can occur multiple times.
- Estate – Raises his arm that makes multiple roots sprout from the ground. These roots are stationary, but getting close enough to these roots can cause them to attack you. It’s best to keep their numbers in check by destroying them to avoid limiting your combat area.
- Stomp very hard – Raises his leg and stomps the ground, unleashing a shockwave that can deal damage up to a mid-range distance. She dodges and runs as soon as you see him raise his paw.
The Vines and Roots can be easily avoided, however if the roots are left unchecked you will easily find yourself in a precarious situation where you have nowhere else safe to run to.
The Elder’s Rewards
Defeating The Elder will give you these rewards:
- the greatest trophy
- swamp key
The Elder trophy can be hung on the sacrificial stone to gain the forsaken power of The Elder. This power can temporarily provide a 60% damage boost against trees, making cutting down trees faster while the power is active. This is a good power to have when building a larger base.
The Swamp Key is used to unlock the Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, which is the next area to progress through the game. Only one key is needed per player.
