Martin’s views on adaptations are likely influenced by his experience in game of Thrones. The author worked closely with showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss on the series’ early seasons, even writing episodes for the first four seasons. According to Martin, his relationship with Benioff and Weiss changed starting in season 5, by which time he found himself increasingly outside the direction of the show. Martin maintains that it is unclear to him exactly why this happened, and Benioff and Weiss have not commented publicly on the matter.
