Vincent Valentine first appeared in the original Final Fantasy 7, designed by Tetsuya Nomura. The character acted as a bodyguard for the scientist who eventually gave birth to the game’s antagonist — Sephiroth. Mercer’s confirmation of Vincent’s voice in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth received an overwhelmingly positive response.
