Elden Ring Doesn’t Need Crafting

A masterpiece of a game, elden ring is easily one of the best RPGs of the last 10 years. By introducing an open world, Hidetaka Miyazaki expanded and revolutionized the Soulsborne genre that he cultivated. If he only featured an open world, the game would be great, but there are many more innovations in this game. elden ring it features a robust magic system, the polished combat the Souls series is known for, and a deep and engaging story created by none other than George RR Martin.

FromSoftware created a wonderful RPG game that players can easily get lost in for countless hours. There is always a new piece of lore to discover and from a gameplay point of view, elden ring has refined the gameplay of the Dark souls games. New mechanics were also introduced to this new evolution of the Soulsborne genre, including fast travel, unlimited stamina outside of combat, and several small dungeons to explore. However, not all of the new mechanics work in the game’s favor. In particular, elden ringThe crafting mechanic adds little to the overall game and actively goes against its design philosophy.

Crafting doesn’t fit Elden Ring’s design

Weapon and item crafting has become a popular mechanic in games, with most modern triple-A games featuring it in some form. While it is unlikely that crafting was implemented in elden ring because it’s hot, that doesn’t change the fact that it doesn’t offer anything to the overall gaming experience. Players can only craft a few items from the start, and to unlock the option to craft more items, players must find or purchase “cookbooks”. Cookbooks are scattered throughout the world, and each one unlocks a few more items that players can craft. However, most of these items can be found in various areas throughout The Lands Between without needing to craft. That means, barring multiplayer elements, crafting can be largely ignored throughout the game without a major change to gameplay or the overall experience.

Besides the fact that most of the craftable items can be found normally in the world or purchased from vendors, crafting is not compatible with the overall game design. If players are meant to use crafting to gain access to useful items without grinding, then locking them behind cookbooks, which some players will never find, doesn’t give them reliable access to those items. Additionally, craftable items give players slight advantages in certain areas, but this does not apply if the player has not found the recipe. Frankly, elden ring it would offer players the same benefit if it had a larger number of areas or enemies that had these items instead.

Elden Ring crafting feels underdeveloped

The open world map in Elden Ring

elden ringThe entire design philosophy revolves around discovery and overcoming difficulties, but the crafting mechanic doesn’t support this. The Lands Between invites players to explore the world and discover new story segments, quests, and treasures. If items made from crafting were more widely available around the world, like the Erdleaf flower, it would further encourage players to explore new areas and discover these items. While players have to explore to find the cookbooks, they are usually hidden or sold by merchants, and players may lose them entirely. However, this does not stop players’ progress because the items can be found elsewhere. If the mechanic were to be removed, the game would remain largely unchanged.

Processing does not affect elden ringIt’s difficult in a substantial way, but it feels underdeveloped and underused. Previous Souls games have managed to provide players with tools without needing to add a crafting mechanic. While the open world design of elden ring had to be updated from previous games, crafting may not have been the best solution. The mechanics don’t add much, if anything, to the overall gameplay and have little to do with the overall gameplay. Fortunately, this also means that the game as a whole is not affected by its inclusion. Despite being an unnecessary mechanic, future titles may find a way to better incorporate it or ditch it entirely.
