Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness concept artist Aaron Black shares production artwork depicting material not used in the final film.

New Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness Concept art has just come out depicting War World and other scrapped universes from the finished film.

The never-before-seen artwork is courtesy of concept artist Aaron Black. art station briefcase. Includes several ideas abandoned during pre-production on the strange doctor sequel, which includes a world in which armies from different points throughout history do battle. Early versions of the Master of the Mystic Arts’ spirit cloak are also shown, as are illustrations of what appears to be a twisted version of the Sanctum Sanctorum. Black does not mention if any of these concepts were developed before Scott Derrickson stepped down as director, however the inclusion of a figure on horseback resembling Nightmare in several pieces suggests this could be the case.

Derrickson intended to use Nightmare as the Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness‘ main antagonist before leaving production. Concept art featuring the demonic supervillain surfaced online in August 2022 and shows a confrontation between him and Doctor Strange outside the lake house where Strange’s sister died as a child. Nightmare was eventually replaced by Scarlet Witch as the strange doctor main villain of the sequel when director Sam Raimi and screenwriter Michael Waldron took over the project.

Raimi and Waldron also dispensed with other elements of Derrickson’s vision for the film, including at least multiversal variants of Stephen Strange himself. Concept artist Darrell J. Warner previously shared artwork of this character online. Nicknamed “Marvelous Melvyn”, he was apparently a street magician who dealt in card tricks and classical illusions. Marvelous Melvyn also sported a decidedly different outfit than his main Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart, donning a red and gold fez and robes.

However, it wasn’t just Derrickson’s ideas that ended up being abandoned. Raimi also abandoned several of his own plans to Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness. Most notably, a scene revealing the gruesome ultimate fate of Karl Mordo was cut at the end of the MCU blockbuster’s production run. Artist Jeremy Simser has since posted storyboards of the scene on Instagram, depicting the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) conjuring Mordo’s (Chiwetel Ejiofor) severed head out of thin air. Simser notes in his post that since this moment wasn’t included in the movie itself, fans shouldn’t necessarily treat it as part of MCU canon.
