Kojima recently discussed details about the new sequel Death Stranding 2 on his Brain Structure podcast. According to him there is a connection between Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2 but it is not that simple. “To appeal to people who haven’t played the first game, I’ve made the game nostalgic as well as new,” he says.
Based on the statement, it seems that the connection between the two titles will only be lightly referenced. It also won’t affect the story of the sequel as it seems to be standalone. It just means that it won’t be necessary to play through the original Death Stranding to understand the sequel’s story.
Death Stranding 2 is now in development. It will be released on PS5.
