DC’s Titans Is a Huge Disservice to Dick Grayson’s Nightwing

The following contains spoilers for Titans Season 4, Episode 3 “Jinx,” now streaming on HBO Max.

titans it has been a somewhat controversial series since its inception, especially in regards to certain characters. Essentially an Arrowverse series on a bigger budget, its fidelity to the source material has often been iffy at best. Sadly, there is no bigger victim of this problem than team leader Dick Grayson.

Going from Robin to Nightwing in the series, Brenton Thwaites’ Dick Grayson is pretty well acted. Unfortunately, every other aspect of him is largely unrecognizable, from his temper and demeanor to his poor leadership skills. Compared to the comics, he’s essentially Dick Grayson, and the problem wasn’t really fixed in the show’s fourth season.

Titans’ Dick Grayson is a foul-mouthed failure of a leader

titans first made waves when it came to Dick’s infamous use of expletives about how he felt about Batman, and cemented the show’s overall tone and use of iconic characters. F-bombs fly freely from the mouths of characters many times more cheerful, and it all feels a bit forced. That’s especially the case with Thwaites’ Robin, who was the first live-action version of the character since Chris O’Donnel in the movies. batman forever Y batman and robin. Therefore, the general sentiment seemed to be to make it as “mature” as possible to get away from the cutesy connotations of the character. When combined with his more heated temper and use of deadlier actions, it made Dick grow much closer to Jason Todd.

When Jason himself was finally introduced, he had to be stupidly brash to make his character stand out. In that sense, Dick is a pretty terrible leader of the Titans, with his plans constantly backfiring and putting people in danger. One example was Joseph Wilson’s use of his villainous father Deathstroke, which only got the boy killed. He is now bringing in Tim Drake to be the new Robin in the show’s fourth season, despite stating that the untrained Tim had only been a Titan for five minutes. None of his plans seem to be working out at all, which fails to bring the cool-headed leader from the comics to the big screen.

Dick Grayson in Teen Titans Comics was a much better and much friendlier leader

Robin leads The New Teen Titans at DC Comics.

In the original comics, viz. the new teen titans By Marv Wolfman and George PĂ©rez, Dick Grayson is the heart and soul of the Teen Titans team. Using the tactics and calm planning taught to him by Batman, Robin/Nightwing is usually the one to arrive after others have gone berserk or been defeated. Examples include becoming Nightwing and being left behind after Deathstroke defeated the other Titans. This contrasts his actions on the show. titans, which usually puts his team in trouble instead of getting them out of it. Also, his likability and brotherly nature are much stronger, making his relationship with the team feel much more like family.

For example, the iconic story “Who is Donna Troy?” it was not a superhero story, but rather a mystery in which Dick volunteered to uncover the truth behind Donna Troy’s lost childhood. This was a gift to the soon-to-be-married Donna, who noted how much she loved Grayson and appreciated her friendship. She also protects the younger heroes, especially after something happens to them. After the death of Jason Todd in the comics, Dick forces young titan Danny Chase to leave the team for his own safety. In titansHowever, he is now openly rooting for the unqualified Tim Drake to become Robin, despite Jason’s earlier death. Dick Grayson is also an incredibly confident young man, even with the most unlikely of people. This makes his relationship with Superboy in previous seasons quite jarring.

Given that the series is probably heading towards its final season, it is unlikely that titans will he ever have time to do Dick Grayson justice. His relationship with Batman and his friends is too far removed from the lovable stuntman fans know and love. This makes Thwaites, who is actually great in the role, an ultimately wasted actor prevented through poor writing from bringing Nightwing fans to life they deserve.

Titans premieres new episodes every Thursday on HBO Max.
