The following contains spoilers for DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #4, out now from DC Comics.
What DCeased: War of the Undead Gods continues, it’s quickly being revealed just how much the deck is being stacked against the new era of superheroes on Earth-2. Even with Superman on his side and Cyborg’s created anti-life cure, defeating Darkseid is no easy feat, especially with his enhanced Yellow Lantern ring and the New Gods under his command.
Simply put, this is one of DC’s most genocidal crusades, made even easier since they’re using Boom Tubes, or Death Tubes, to teleport and spread the Anti-Life infection. Well, come DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #4 by Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Neil Edwards, Andy Lanning, Rain Beredo, and Saida Temofonte), it is confirmed that Darkseid has a new Superwoman in his arsenal, who can help take down the House of El.
DCeased turns Maxima into Darkseid’s weapon
In DC history, Máxima has been a venerable superwoman from the planet Almerac, after her introduction in the 1980s by Roger Stern and George Pérez. She often confronts the Man of Steel, beating him and the Justice League after Kal-El refused to mate with her. Thankfully, DC has cleaned up that toxic arc, making Maxima an LGBTQIA+ character seeking purpose and destiny as one of the most powerful people in the galaxy, rather than war for rejection.
Here, Máxima has an altruistic figure as she sends her people via boats, knowing that the wave is coming. She stays behind with her beloved Primaa to buy time to fight Darkseid’s legion, and as they cut down the Forever People in bloody and brutal fashion, the numbers game wins. Primaa is opened by Darkseid’s Omega Beams, while Maxima is overpowered. It is not shown, but subtitles confirm that Darkseid then turns Maxima into a mind-controlled weapon.
DCeased could use Maxima against Superman and Jon Kent
Now, Máxima has always been pretty brutish, and this story specifies that she doesn’t have the morals like Superman. Therefore, since she’s not vulnerable to kryptonite, Maxima could become Darkseid’s true trump card, ironic since she also has Supergirl under her thumb. But in Maxima’s case, she feels like someone less flawed, more experienced, and a war hound that Darkseid can unleash in a bigger way. Interestingly, she has all of Supergirl’s powers, but she also has psionic abilities.
So it could be that Máxima could try to avoid being brainwashed like Lobo did, and switch to the heroic side. But as she stands, Darkseid is her puppeteer, and she could play into how Maxima has always had immense pent-up rage. It’s also unclear if Kal-El ever angered her in this reality, but what is certain is that Darkseid has someone who can break Kent’s men once in full berserker mode. Ultimately, with Superman and the Green Lanterns at odds, and the shadowy Mxyzptlk offering the heroes aid, it’s definitely the perfect time for Darkseid to strike, with Maxima leading the charge against a fragile, fractured, and rudderless alliance.
