Andor Season 1 Hones in on the Cost of Building a Rebellion

The following contains spoilers for Andor Season 1, Episode 12, “Rix Road,” now available on Disney+.

fans of Star Wars They weren’t sure what to expect from the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Disney+ spinoff series, if only because they knew how the story ended. Season 1 of Andorhowever, he used the main character whose fate is sealed to show in excruciating detail the high cost of building a rebellion that can win.

Viewers expected to see the beginnings of the Rebellion, a suspicion confirmed when Mon Mothma actress Genevieve O’Reilly signed up for the show. It was expected that others like General Nadine or Bail Organa would also appear. With the exception of Mothma, Andor himself, and a one-time appearance by the legacy character, Admiral Yularen (played by a new actor), familiar faces are hard to find. This story is personal to Cassian and shows what it took for her to commit to the Rebel Alliance. However, it is through her story that Star Wars viewers get to see, perhaps for the first time, the true cost of insurrection against tyrannical power. Things have to get worse before they can get better. Cassian’s involvement in the Rebellion begins with him ending up on the run for murder. However, her effort to free herself from both her crime and the Rebellion leads to her home becoming ground zero for one of the first battles of the Galactic Civil War.

The personal is political for Cassian Andor in season 1

Other pre-Rebel Alliance stories in the Star Wars canon have focused on characters who have a vested interest in fighting the Empire. In star wars rebels Y Obi Wan Kenobi, the Rebels fans you know are those involved in trying to save the lives of the remaining Jedi while still doing “good” for the galaxy. Of the two series, Andor maybe closer to rebels because Cassian is also about that galactic outlaw life. She was looking for her sister, lost to galactic colonialism, and accidentally killed a guard. She purposely killed the second and then went on the run. His effort to simply stay free led him into Luthen’s clutches.

Luthen’s first release for the Rebellion would not be necessary for the Ghost crew. Hera Syndulla, Ezra Bridger, and company were eager to fight the Empire. Cassian, however, did not want to die. Luthen had to wait until she was running for her life before he risked her for the holdup at Aldhani. After she unexpectedly survives this mission, she returns with her money to rescue her mother, Maarva, and her droid family. However, in fantastic fictional irony, the mugging that Cassian barely survived inspired her to fight the Empire on Ferrix.

At the end of the series, Cassian is really ready to “die doing something important”, because it is the example that Maarva showed him with her death. However, since his murder spree in the back alleys, Cassian Andor has become one of the most wanted figures in the galaxy by both the Empire and the Luthen Rebels.

The cost of the rebellion in Star Wars is high for the poor and the rich

The revolt in Ferrix cost the people their lives, and the Empire continues to control the city. The only people who benefited from it are Cassian and those close to him. In fact, at the beginning of season 2 of Andor, fans shouldn’t be surprised to hear about more horrors being visited in the place that bred such Rebel scum. However, the rich characters in the series also pay a heavy price, both in real money and in their souls. In Luthen’s “manifesto” he talks about how he recognized the injustice of the Empire and resisted knowing it would make things worse for the people. She does it so that the heroes whose names the galaxy knows can save her. Heroes like Mon Mothma.

The illumination of the inner life of Mon Mothma is one of the greatest gifts Andor had given Star Wars. The Disney+ series crystallizes the abstract concept of this character’s path to Rebellion. Fans knew that she served as a senator while she secretly aided the Rebellion. However, her parts of this story of hers have shown just how constant her battle really is. She is in such danger that she has purposefully distanced herself from her family, to protect them from Imperial scrutiny should she be caught. rebels fans know she openly defected around a year prior A new hope. This means that given the timeline set by Tony Gilroy, this scene could appear in the back half of Season 2. Those fans will also know that she doesn’t have a husband and daughter by her side when she does.

Andor it’s an amazing piece of Star Wars storytelling that takes its time to drive home the background noise of fear and paranoia in the Empire. Cassian Andor only wanted to unite his family and ended up losing them all.

Andor Season 1 is streaming on Disney+. Season 2 is expected in 2024.
