Across the Spider-Verse Is Dominated By Six Unique Animation Styles


Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producer Phil Lord reveals that the sequel will feature six different animation styles, unlike the 2018 film.


Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Producer Phil Lord revealed that the upcoming film will feature more than one style of animation.


while talking to EmpireLord stated that, in contrast to 2018 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versewhich used only one animation style, Through the Spider-Verse will have six “So we’re taking those tools, adding everything we learned in The Mitchells against the machines, and then to grow them even more to fit the ambition of this film,” he said. “Which is to surprise yourself every time you enter a new environment, and also to make sure that the style of the film reflects the story, and that the images are driven by feelings, unlike some intellectual art project. Related to this, Lord’s fellow producer Chris Miller had previously said that Through the Spider-Verse was “much, much bigger” than In the Spider-Verse, adding that the film not only takes place in six universes, but features a cast of 240 characters. Miller explained that those characters are “mostly minor or background [ones]” cast Through the Spider-VerseThe story of is “personal” and will focus mainly on “Thousands [Morales] and his family together [with] gwen [Stacy] and a handful of others.”


Across the Spider-Verse welcomes new heroes and villains

Among the new characters Through the Spider-Verse is the villain of the film, known as The Spot. According to a description by Sony Pictures Animation, the character’s body is “covered in interdimensional portals” that “feel like ‘living ink'” and can take him anywhere he wants. Spot himself can also “make these portals appear out of nowhere” to move other people and objects. It has also been reported that the film will feature Spider-Men from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and PlayStation games, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Weather Through the Spider-Verse is scheduled to introduce several new characters, the sequel will also see the return of Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099, voiced by Oscar Isaac, who appeared in a post-credits scene from the 2018 film. Above, Isaac explained what made his version of Spider-Man stand out from the other wall-crawlers.

“What I can say is that what makes this character so funny is that he’s the only Spider-Man who doesn’t have a sense of humor,” Isaac said. “Because they all act like…they’re like jokes, right? Everybody makes jokes, except this guy who just doesn’t. He’s a very serious Spider-Man.” However, despite his lack of humor, Lord and Miller revealed that Isaac’s retaliation from Spider-Man 2099 came on the condition that he not be boring.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hits theaters June 2, 2023.
